Overview

Oxytocin is an endogenous cyclic nonapeptide hormone and neuropeptide produced primarily in the hypothalamus. In research settings, it is studied for roles in social behavior, stress-response biology, and neuroendocrine signaling.

Mechanism of Action

Oxytocin activates the oxytocin receptor, a G protein-coupled receptor that modulates intracellular calcium and downstream neuronal or smooth-muscle signaling depending on the tissue model.

Common Research Uses

  • social behavior research
  • neuroendocrine signaling studies
  • stress-response models
  • oxytocin receptor assays
