Overview
MOTS-c (Mitochondrial ORF of the 12S rRNA Type-c) is a 16 amino acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome—one of the first identified mitochondria-derived peptides (MDPs). It acts as a peptide hormone regulating cellular metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and aging-associated stress responses.
Mechanism of Action
MOTS-c is produced in mitochondria and translocates to the nucleus under metabolic or oxidative stress, where it activates AMPK signaling and regulates folate-methionine cycle genes. This leads to improved insulin sensitivity, enhanced exercise tolerance, and modulation of aging-related gene expression pathways.
